Real-Time Landmine Detection with Ground-Penetrating Radar Using Discriminative and Adaptive Hidden Markov Models

چکیده
We propose a real-time software system for landmine detection using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). The system includes an efficient and adaptive preprocessing component; a hidden Markov model(HMM-) based detector; a corrective training component; and an incremental update of the background model. The preprocessing is based on frequency-domain processing and performs ground-level alignment and background removal. The HMM detector is an improvement of a previously proposed system (baseline). It includes additional preand postprocessing steps to improve the time efficiency and enable real-time application. The corrective training component is used to adjust the initial model parameters to minimize the number of misclassification sequences. This component could be used offline, or online through feedback to adapt an initial model to specific sites and environments. The background update component adjusts the parameters of the background model to adapt it to each lane during testing. The proposed software system is applied to data acquired from three outdoor test sites at different geographic locations, using a state-of-the-art array GPR prototype. The first collection was used as training, and the other two (contain data from more than 1200 m2 of simulated dirt and gravel roads) for testing. Our results indicate that, on average, the corrective training can improve the performance by about 10% for each site. For individual lanes, the performance gain can reach 50%.

Progress in the Research of Ground Bounce Removal for Landmine Detection with Ground Penetrating Radar
Downward looking ground penetrating radar (GPR) has been considered a viable technology for landmine detection. For such a GPR with the antennas positioned very close to the ground surface, the reflections from the ground surface, i.e., the ground bounce, are very strong and can completely dominate the weak returns from shallowly buried plastic mines. Hence, one of the key challenges of using G...

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a promising sensor for landmine detection, however there are two major problems to overcome. One is the rough ground surface. The other problem is the distance between the antennas of GPR. It remains irremovable clutters on a sub-surface image output from GPR by first problem. Geography adaptive scanning is useful to image objects beneath rough ground surface. ...

Landmine problem is enormous and worldwide. Impulse ground penetrating radar (ImGPR) is one of the technologies that have been extensively researched as a means of improving landmine detection efficiency. We propose two methods to detect buried landmines. Both methods are based on background subtraction techniques to detect buried plastic landmines. The first method uses adaptive background est...

The land mine crisis is all over frightening since there are presently 500 million unexploded, buried mines in about 70 countries. Governments are noticing this situation seriously since land mines are claiming the limbs and lives of civilians’ very day. A multiple of landmine extraction from the data which are obtained from the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Traditional algorithms targets on ...
